Put down that glass of warm milk. British researchers have found the food that really can help you sleep better and wake up more refreshed. A study at the University of Oxford shows that eating more fish is associated with better sleep. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish help the brain make melatonin, a hormone linked to deeper sleep. The research on children showed that kids with higher blood levels of the long-chain omega-3 DHA (the main omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain) are less restless in their sleep, don’t resist going to sleep and experience fewer sleep disturbances. The study showed that a daily supplement of omega-3 (as in a fish oil capsule) produced about an extra hour of more sleep ever night. The children also experienced seven fewer waking episodes nightly
Here’s another reason to drink coffee. Research at Cornell shows that the beverage contains chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant that protects the retina in the eye. According to the Cornell scientists, coffee consists of 7 percent to 9 percent chlorogenic acid, a natural chemical that may keep your eyesight from deteriorating and prevent blindness from retinal damage, glaucoma, diabetes and aging. The retina is on the back wall of the eye. It contains millions of cells that receive light and transfers the information to nerve cells. The retina is very metabolically active and consumes plenty of oxygen. That makes it highly vulnerable to oxidative stress. This drink is perfect on a hot day. You can use any brand of lemonade: homemade or storebought. I used the country time powder, because it’s what we had at the time…
Fill blender halfway with lemonade
Add 3-4 mint leaves (I used spearmint)
Add ice if you want it frozen, if you just want a refreshing drink, no ice.
Blend until smooth & pour into a glass.
Ahh…so good. Mint is also good for your digestive system…that’s a perk!

Being transplanted from quiet, familiar Christchurch to the concrete jungle of Sydney has done my head in a little, but this weekend I really feel like I managed to regain a bit of sanity. I picked up a beautiful little patch of baby mizuna, the sweetest sprayfree cherry tomatoes (which are still growing here!), and crunchy carrots at the farmers market. Then I joined my nearest community garden, where I picked some parsley, warrigal greens and rocket in the sunshine…bliss. I learnt a few new gardening tips on my first visit too – it’s great to learn from a group! Morning routines are hard to change.
It’s the time of day most prone to auto-pilot, and is therefore reliant on a series of repeatable steps that do not require much thought, yet are likely to get us to our required destination on time. If part of a routine is changed, some other part also has to shift. It’s the balance of nature – our morning routines are a finely tuned system that self correct when something new is added.

Raspberries make me think of my CBF (canine best friend) who I grew up with. He was amazing; part German shepherd, part labrador, so handsome! We used to have raspberry bushes in the garden and he use to go raspberry picking when he thought no one was looking – literally he used to nibble off the raspberries …so cute!

Apple picking season is September through November and yet they’re available year-round. How? They’re sprayed with a fungicide to prevent spoilage and then coated with a food-grade wax before being put into cold storage, says Christopher Campbell, EWG’s Vice President for Information Technology. “They only pick them one time a year, so that apple you eat in August was picked the previous year,” says Campbell.
This grants them the top spot in the Dirty Dozen list.
Like apples, you can’t peel or wash your way out of this one. Because pesticides need to be diluted before being added to crops, they’re water soluble, says Campbell. Since celery has a high water content, the toxins are sucked directly into the stalk, making it virtually impossible to get around ingesting the pesticides unless you buy organic.

A recent scientific study revealed that the reason why some people remain skinny even after they consume large amounts of food, versus people who eat smaller portions somehow happen to be overweight depends on your insulin levels.
