HEART HEALTHY SNACK

Tags

For a healthier heart, indulge in the snack food that contains a collection of natural chemicals that provide your heart with jaw-dropping (and blood pressure-dropping) benefits. Eating walnuts in a heart-healthy diet can lower blood cholesterol levels. The oil in walnuts improves the performance of blood vessel walls and helps HDL (good) cholesterol keep the arteries functioning more efficiently. The oil found in walnuts can maintain blood vessel function after a meal, which is very important given that blood vessel integrity is often compromised in individuals with cardiovascular disease. The walnut oil is particularly good at preserving the function of endothelial cells, which play an important role in cardiovascular health. Simple dietary changes, such as incorporating walnuts and/or their oil in a heart healthy diet, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

If you want to protect yourself from diabetes, here’s the breakfast food that lowers  your risk. A high-protein breakfast containing, eggs, meat or fish helps control your blood sugar, reduces your insulin release and are factors that can reduce your chances of diabetes. Eating more protein in the morning can beneficially affect the glucose and insulin levels. If you eat healthy now and consume foods that help you control your glucose levels, you may be protecting yourself from developing diabetes in the future.

STRENGTHEN YOUR BRAIN AS YOU AGE

Tags

The number of people who suffer memory problems as they age is mind-blowing. But you don’t have to let your brain blow a fuse as you age. Three activities you should start now can drop your risk of descending into dementia as your age ascends. According to research at Concordia University in Montreal, three ways to defend your brain include:

  • Do tasks that exercise your mind. Do activities like: Solve puzzles, engage in games like chess, go to live theater, read serious literature, learn another language and stay engaged with current events.
  • Vary your mental activities. Don’t do the very same mental exercises over and over.
  • If you feel depressed, take actions to boost your mood. Exercise, social activities and more fruits and vegetables may help. Seek medical attention for serious depression.

Retirement usually occurs right around the time when normal age-related declines in cognitive function come to the fore. So it is important to understand what is happening to brainpower during this period and to identify risk factors for mental decline, as well as factors that will help protect against it. It is equally important to address symptoms of depression to help fight against cognitive decline.

Green tea may boost our working memory

Green tea hasbeen hailed for many health benefits, including its effects against cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Now, new research suggests the beverage can enhance our brain’s cognitive functions, particularly the working memory.  The research team  of the University Hospital of Basel in Switzerland – says their findings suggest that green tea could be promising in the treatment of cognitive impairments associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, such as dementia. They recently published their findings in the journal Psychopharmacology.  Green tea, native to China and India, and unlike other teas, green tea is made from unoxidized leaves. This minimal processing means it is rich in antioxidants. Previous studies have also suggested that green tea may have a beneficial impact on the brain’s cognitive functions. However, according to the researchers of this most recent study, the exact mechanisms behind this claim have been unclear.  Green tea ‘boosts connectivity between parietal and frontal cortex of the brain’. To further investigate, the team conducted a study using 12 healthy male volunteers with a mean age of 24.1 years.  Participants were given a milk whey-based soft drink containing 27.5 g of green tea extract, while others were given a soft drink without the green tea extract. Volunteers were unaware of which drink they had been given. The participants were then required to carry out a series of working memory tasks. During these tasks, their brain activity was measured using magnetic resonance imaging MRI. The researchers found that the participants who consumed the soft drink with the green tea extract showed increased connectivity between the right superior parietal lobule and the frontal cortex of the brain. This activity correlated with improved performance on the working memory tasks.  “The present study shows that green tea extract enhances functional connectivity from the parietal to the frontal cortex during working memory processing in healthy controls. Interestingly, this effect on effective connectivity was related to the green tea induced improvement in cognitive performance. The findings provide first insights into the neural effect of green tea on working memory processing at the neural network level, suggesting a mechanism on short-term plasticity of interregional brain connections.”According to the research team, since green tea appears to increase connectivity between frontal and parietal brain regions during working memory processing, it is worth testing the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of disorders involving cognitive impairments, such as dementia.

THE BIGGEST DANGER TO YOUR TEETH

If you know anything about illegal drugs like meth or cocaine you may realize how they destroy teeth. But a common item you probably consumed today can be just as corrosive and erosive for your tooth enamel. Research at Temple University shows that soft drinks cause tooth erosion similar to what occurs when you take illegal drugs. Tooth erosion takes place when the acid in soft drinks wears away tooth enamel, the outer, protective  tooth layers. Without protective enamel, teeth are more vulnerable to cavities. Theycan also crack and become more becoming sensitive and discoloured. The study analyzed the damage in three people’s mouths. One person, was a meth addict, another frequently used cocaine and the third drank large amounts of diet soda. None of these people practiced good dental hygiene or made regular visits to dentists. The analysis revealed severe damage from tooth erosion in all three of the study subjects. Each person experienced severe tooth erosion caused by the high acid levels present in their ‘drug’ of choice — meth, crack, or soda. The citric acid present in both regular and diet soda is known to have a high potential for causing tooth erosion. The person who drank diet soda had been downing 2 liters of diet soda daily for more than three years. The striking similarities found in this study should be a wake-up call to consumers who think that soda — even diet soda — is not harmful to their oral health

Burn more belly fat at your desk

If you spend long hours working at a desk, your job may be expanding your waistline. But now research at Kansas State University shows a way to activate an enzyme in your body to burn off more fat as you work. When you sit unmoving for hours at work, and your muscles are dormant, you switch off a natural chemical in your body called lipoprotein lipase, or LPL, says researchers . Lipoprotein lipase stimulates the cells to take in fat or triglycerides and use it for energy. To get LPL going again, take more breaks fromsitting and move around the office. Work standing up. Pace back and forth every 15 minutes or half hour. Not only do people need to be more physically active by walking or doing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, but they should also be looking at ways to reduce their sitting time .

This food helps you sleep better than warm milk

Put down that glass of warm milk. British researchers have found the food that really can help you sleep better and wake up more refreshed. A study at the University of Oxford shows that eating more fish is associated with better sleep. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish help the brain make melatonin, a hormone linked to deeper sleep. The research on children showed that kids with higher blood levels of the long-chain omega-3 DHA (the main omega-3 fatty acid found in the brain) are less restless in their sleep, don’t resist going to sleep and experience fewer sleep disturbances. The study showed that a daily supplement of omega-3 (as in a fish oil capsule) produced about an extra hour of more sleep ever night. The children also experienced seven fewer waking episodes nightly

Coffee can give you better eyesight

Here’s another reason to drink coffee. Research at Cornell shows that the beverage contains chlorogenic acid, a powerful antioxidant that protects the retina in the eye. According to the Cornell scientists, coffee consists of 7 percent to 9 percent chlorogenic acid, a natural chemical that may keep your eyesight from deteriorating and prevent blindness from retinal damage, glaucoma, diabetes and aging. The retina is on the back wall of the eye. It contains millions of cells that receive light and transfers the information to nerve cells. The retina is very metabolically active and consumes plenty of oxygen. That makes it highly vulnerable to oxidative stress. Coffee’s chlorogenic acid can help prevent potential damage from the by-products of this oxygen consumption
